U.S.: Illinois district must give full locker room access to transgender student

In Chicago Illinois, the U.S. Department of Education gave full access to use the girl locker room to a transgender student claiming, " All students deserve the opportunity to participate equally in school programs and activities--this is a basic civil right." However the Township High School District 211 defends its stance saying, "We do not agree with (the DOE's) decision and remain strong in our belief that the District's course of action, including private changing stations in our locker rooms, appropriately serves the dignity and privacy of all students in our educational environment."

GOP debate meeting: Big bluster, modest proposals

                                                                          GOP debate

The republican presidential campaign stirred up a lot of disagreement Sunday night, after its proposal for change. This proposal includes: a two hour time limit, 30 seconds for opening and closing statements, equal speaking time for each candidate. Several campaigns are considering having all 14 candidates appear on the same stage or randomly splitting them up in two groups of seven. However, frontrunners, especially Donald Trump have objected this suggestion.

Park 51/ Mosque

Battle B

1.     Assume that the documentary, The Man Behind the Mosque, provided an accurate and research-based perspective on how the “Ground Zero Mosque” became a story. Based on what you saw there, what steps can you remember the cable-news media covering the story taking to investigate who was actually behind the Mosque in terms of mission, goals, and funding?
- Based on what I saw in the video, the media reached out to Sherif El-Gamal, Pamela Geller, and Imam Feisal Adbul Rauf, and covered both sides of the debate.
2.
Who brought the story of the “Ground Zero Mosque” to Fox News, the station that broke the story and led coverage of the story?
-Pamela Geller
3.
It can be argued that much of the cable news coverage of the story was just that – coverage of a “story,” and how people felt about this “story,” rather than actual reporting.  Explain how we can see this at work
-You can see this work by they interviewed people strongly involved in the controversy, for example the people who lost loved ones in 9/11, and the man behind the Park 51 project, which can lead to biased opinions rather than actual facts.
4.
The journalists of Frontline included coverage of and interviews with the staff of Park 51 (the NYU grad and a couple other part-timers).  Do these individuals appear ever to have been interviewed on cable-news?
-No
5.
What sources did Cable news appear to rely on for knowledge and expertise about Islam?  How credible did you find these sources?  Why?
They appeared in the video to rely on Sherif and Imam Muhammad Musri.
6.     How relevant is the ownership of a media source for understanding its goals and how its goals may shape bias in its coverage?
-Cable news relied on mostly on somewhat credible historians, however they were a little biased on the interpretations of Park 51/ Mosque.
7.
Who was, at the time of the Ground Zero Mosque story, the second largest shareholder in the News Corp?
-Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, a nephew of the Saudi king

8.
If you bring up the topic of the Ground Zero mosque today, many people might say something like, “Oh yeah . . . What ever happened to that?”  Think about it:  Given the level of urgency that was attached to the story, why did cable news just stop covering the story of the Mosque at Ground Zero?
-Fox news stopped covering this maybe because the people became uninterested and they didn’t want to bore that audience or because they want attention on them due to the controversy with Al-Waleed.

 4. Historically, the media in the United States has often been viewed as playing the role of “watchdog.” Do research to understand the watchdog role of the media so that you can answer these questions:  Who is being watched?  Who is being protected?  And from what?
-The new is being watched, the people are being protected, from the dangers and breaking news of the media.

5. What have you heard about “liberal bias”? (Don’t do research for this one – just write down what you have heard about this phrase.  If you have never heard this phrase before, say so, and then explain what you think it might mean.)
I've never heard about this phrase but I am assuming it has something to do with people being bias when it comes to politics or politicians.

AP GOV- Speaker of the House

Battle B
AP Gov

1.  The Constitution doesn't give a specific answer other then they are chosen by the members of the House. The Speaker is the political and parliamentary leader of the House. The Speaker influences committee assignments for new members, appoints the party other leaders, rules on questions of parliamentary procedure. The Speaker of the House is behind the Vice President in lines of succession.

2. House Leadership:
         1) The majority leader- usually the second ranking member of the majority party, is the party leader on the floor. Helps plan the party's legislative program.
         2) The minority leader- heads and organizes the minority party, this person's influence is usually limited. If the party succeeds in the next congressional election, the minority leader could well be the next speaker

  Senate Leadership:
          1) Vice President- the vice president has little power, it can only cast a vote in case of a tie.

3. If the President and Vice President were impeached or died then the Speaker of the House would become President.

4. Samuel Rayburn

5. Nancy Pelosi became the first women Speaker of the House in 2007, and she represented the Democrat party.

6. Newt Gingrich served from 1994-1999, he is famous for leading the republican revolution in 1994

7. John A. Boehner resigned September 25, 2015 after 20 years as Congress and 4 years as Speaker, since he was not getting support from Republicans since that party is so divided.

8. Kevin McCarthy, it is no longer the case because he knew he could not win.

9. Because he has a good reputation with most conservative members of the republican party. He said he didn't want to run but he is thinking about it.

10. Paul Ryan was selected chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. This Committee's responsibility it to work on the biggest economic issues facing the country, including taxes, trade, Social Security health care, and social problems.

11. A congressional committee is a legislative sub-organization in the United States Congress that handles a specific duty (rather than the general duties of congress). There are 46 committees.

12. He may not choose to take the job because you have to be on the road about a hundred days out of the year, also he already has more responsibilities that the average congressman, due to his position as chair of one of the most influential committees.

13. If I was in his position I would probably not take the position for several reasons. Paul Ryan is already have doubts about taking the position which indicates he probably does not want to do the job so he would do it half heartedly, also it weakens his chances of becoming President in the future.

14. It can be, if the President and Vice President die or get get impeached. Not to back to back, but President William Taft was speaker of the House and then went on to become President.

15. A congressional caucus is a group of members of the United States Congress that meets to pursue common legislative objects. There are 78 caucus. Committees work by they specialize in specific issues and review legislation pertaining to the those issues, caucuses however, are formed by members to provide a forum for issues or legislative agendas.

16. The House of Freedom Caucus is a congressional caucus consisting of conservative Republican members of the United States House of Representatives. The House Freedom Caucus wants a speaker that is a strong conservative.

17.

When Kevin McCarthy withdrew from the race to replace Speaker John Boehner on Thursday, many GOP representatives looked at Paul Ryan as their only hope to reunite the party. However, that is looking unlikely, Ryan is a family man and takes his job as a dad very seriously, if he took the job of speaker it would take more time away from his young kids and wife then he would like. Even though it is unlikely, there still is a possibility that he will run.

First Quarter Reflection

Battle B

First quarter is always a struggle because you're getting used to the teachers and the new class, and AP Gov was no exception. I like having the blog post because it's beneficial if you remember doing the post, I also like having the study guides to help prepare for test, for me personally it helps me study and be organized. The only thing I really didn't like this year was the Constitution project/test we had, I didn't feel like I thoroughly got the concept of the project, and found it hard to finish the project AND still have time to study for the test.

John Boehner made the decision to resign from congress in a meeting on Friday. He stated that almost no one knew of his decision before making it Friday and said at a news conference, "So before I went to sleep last night, I told my wife, I said, 'You know, I might just make an announcement tomorrow." Mr. Boehner's was trying to think of a solution to keep the government open the rest of the year, but as pressured the conservatives who would not vote for a bill that funded Planned Parenthood, the announcement weakened the chances of a government shutdown.

Introduction to Federalism

Battle B
AP Gov Homework

1. Federalism-  mode of political organization that unites separate states or other polities within an overarching political system in such a way as to allow each to maintain its own fundamental political integrity. Federal systems do this by requiring that basic policies be made and implemented through negotiation in some form, so that all the members can share in making and executing decisions. The political principles that animate federal systems emphasize the primacy of bargaining and negotiated coordination among several power centres; they stress the virtues of dispersed power centres as a means for safeguarding individual and local liberties.
Definition of Federalism

2. There are 195 nation-states in the world.

3. Seven countries have a federal system of government, they include: Austria, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Switzerland, and Venezuela.

4.

5. Unitary System- a system of political organization in which most or all of the governing power resides in a centralized government. It contrast with the federal system.

6. 132 countries have a unitary system, the largest countries include: China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan, Phillippines.

7. The Federalism systems is completely different from the unitary system. In a unitary government, the central government possesses much authority and decision-making power, local governing bodies simply serve as administrative arms of the central government. However, in a federalism government, power is split between a central government authority and its constituent states, usually involving a constitution which defines how power is shared between national, state, and local government.

8. The image above gives the perspective on federal government involvement of a police officer. The sick patient is laying in his bed, clearly sick of cancer which makes us feel sympathy for him, while the "feds" are also just doing there job and are punishing the mad doing illegal things such as marijuana.

9. The image above gives the perspective on federal government involvement from a politician but more specifically from a Republican. The elephant, which is the symbol for the Republican party is expressing how the states should allowed to do set their own policies without the government interfering, which is a common argument the Republican party makes.

10. In the video, it uses a three layer cake as a metaphor for federalism with local being the top layer, state being the middle, and federal being the bottom and biggest layer. It explains federalism as local taking care of local issues like the police force, water and building permit. State handles issues like education, healthcare, and recreation. Finally, federal covers issues like national issues like national parks, military, and space exploration.

11. It is a metaphor because the chocolate represents the federal government and the vanilla represents the local and state government.
